If a denial is issued, you have the right to appeal. Written appeals go to the Chief of Police and must be filed within seven business days of receiving the denial. The appeal should state why you believe the denial was incorrect and cite any relevant statute. The department is required to respond to the appeal within two business days.

Under RCW 42.56.240(14)(e), some people qualify for a full or partial exemption from this fee, including people directly involved in the incident, their legal counsel, and certain others.
